In 1595 an anonymous pamphlet in Hebrew was published in Venice. According to his title, Sura me-ra' (Turn aside from evil), it should have contained a condemnation of gambling. The work knew some fifteen subsequent editions in other places, including translations into Yiddish, German, French and English. Its author, the young Leon Modena (1571-1648) was to became one of the most personalities in the Venetian ghetto.
