The book is the first volume of the research project Opere firmate nell'arte italiana / Medioevo (Corpus of Signed Works of Art in Italy / Middle Ages), directed by Maria Monica Donato (Scuola Normale Superiore of Pisa). The project aims to create an archive of all works of Italian art with a signature executed between the VIth century and the XVth century, and thus to provide a tool for interdisciplinary research in the humanities. The study of signatures in works of art offers an opportunity to explore the autography and self-awareness of the artists as well as their literacy, the palaeographical characteristics of the captions, and the iconographical relationship between inscriptions and images. As texts, these inscriptions can be studied for their historical, literary and philological implications. This first volume is focused on Sienese goldsmith during Late Middle Ages and collect 62 artworks made by 35 artists.
