The article focusses on the influence of Friedrich Nietzsche's thinking on Heinrich Mann as the author of the novel "Der Untertan". In particular it underlines Mann's familiarity with Nietzsche's genealogic analysis of language and quotes some pages written by the author in a "notebook", discovered in 1996 by Peter-paul Schneider, where a central character of the Novel, Wolfgang Buck, talks with the loyal subject about the philisopher and the way the era of Bismarck and Wilhelm II took advantage of his language for its own reactionary aims.
