Yoroppa ni okeru Sarashina nikki no juyo to hyoka (Ricezione e considerazione del Sarashina nikki in Europa)

The Sarashina Diary (Sarashina nikki), probably written sometime around 1060, is a memoir by Sugawara Takasue no musume (the daughter of Sugawara no Takasue) a lady-in-waiting of Heian-period Japan. Unfortunately, this work, one of the most representative of Japanese classical literature, until recent times has not been adeguately studied in Italy and in Europe where we can find a few essays about it, sometimes only a brief critical introduction to the translations. This essay aims to present the state of the art in translations and critical essays about the Sarashina Diary in Europe and at the same time to explore the problems a translator has to face when he is involved in the translation of a text which belongs to different culture and time.
