A recent study of the Archaic epigraphic evidence in the Segesta area, carried out as part of the ERC Project “Crossreads” (Grant Agreement no. 885040), has revealed the existence of a few documents that can be read as transcriptions in Greek characters of Libyan names. Based on this scarce but significant evidence, already highlighted by M. Lejeune and R. Rebuffat, my paper will analyse the issue of the relations between western Sicily and North Africa in the Archaic period. The role of Segesta in the wider Mediterranean context will be examined, highlighting a geographical dimension often forgotten for the Archaic period - that of North Africa - but which was certainly present in the cultural landscape of western Sicily, and showing how Segesta was a crucial point in a dense network of contacts and relations that has yet to be fully addressed for the Archaic period.
