This essay explores the relationship between children’s literature and utopia. Through the representation of imaginary landscapes and gendered communities, the implied child reader is given access to places of hope and aspiration where an alternative (though often problematic) vision of the world is provided. In a number of Victorian fairy tales the utopian impulse can be perceived in the creation of countries of the mind – very peculiar versions of Fairyland – as utopian settings for the display of more equal relationships between the sexes.

Abstract

This essay explores the relationship between children’s literature and utopia. Through the representation of imaginary landscapes and gendered communities, the implied child reader is given access to places of hope and aspiration where an alternative (though often problematic) vision of the world is provided. In a number of Victorian fairy tales the utopian impulse can be perceived in the creation of countries of the mind – very peculiar versions of Fairyland – as utopian settings for the display of more equal relationships between the sexes.
