Art historian Licisco Magagnato (Vicenza 1921-Venezia 1987) promoted architectural restoration and a new set-up for the Museum of Castelvecchio in Verona, by famous architect Carlo Scarpa, and is considered a remarkable protagonist in the intellectual debate post WW2. He was however also a curator or a promoter, or wrote texts, for more then 110 contemporary art exhibitions. This perspective was never analyzed before, whereas it reveals a role of up-to-date and passionate specialist. Moreover he was also “a painter at heart”, since he used to paint during his youth, and although he ceased it, he was indeed interested in contemporary art also as art critic. From his first reviews, published on newspapers or magazines, to texts written for friends, from important exhibitions – as the ones of Semeghini, Vedova, de Pisis, Balla, and Consagra – to young conceptual artists shows, the presence of contemporary art is a marker all long his career, beside his engagement for cultural heritage and early modern art.
