The author discusses the ideas presented in Carlo Tullio Altans book La nostra Italia, which dates the split between north and south Italy back to the 18th century. Glauco Sanga sustains that Italian dualism is the resuit of a long-term break-up, the economic roots of which go back to the Lombard era, which witnessed the development of farming in the north, followed by manufacturing (13th century) and industry (18th century), while the south suffered from persistent stagnation and a decline exacerbated by re-feudalisation.

Abstract

The author discusses the ideas presented in Carlo Tullio Altans book La nostra Italia, which dates the split between north and south Italy back to the 18th century. Glauco Sanga sustains that Italian dualism is the resuit of a long-term break-up, the economic roots of which go back to the Lombard era, which witnessed the development of farming in the north, followed by manufacturing (13th century) and industry (18th century), while the south suffered from persistent stagnation and a decline exacerbated by re-feudalisation.
