Emilio Sereni’s approach to history of the Italian agricultural landscape is still useful to understand the landscape of 19th and 20th century reclaimed lands. Despite inertial elements, these relatively recently reclaimed lands stand nowadays in a complex situation: new crops, changes in production factors and socio-economic frame, reintroduction of wetlands and urban sprawl represent some landscape reshaping key factors. Urban sprawl, particularly, threats hydrogeological asset and tents to wipe out a landscape that is a major heritage of modernization in Italian countryside. This happens also because of a current lack of awareness of land reclamation landscape, mainly due to its difficult perception. Sereni’s lesson can help to make shape and structure of land reclamation landscape understood and recognized as a heritage, especially through collection and interpretation of iconographic material.
