The article reconstructs, on the basis of literary and newly edited archival documents, the visits of the German scholars who came to Naples to read the Herculaneum papyri. The time span covered is 1899 to 1969, from the first visit of W. Crönert to the foundation of the Centro Internazionale per lo Studio dei Papiri Ercolanesi.
