The natural and human ensemble of Venice and its Lagoon, with its peculiar island features, is among one of the most studied urban and environmental systems in the world. This paper provides a brief historical and environmental context of this space and a possible platform where the complexity and liminality of wetlands, lagoons and islands are introduced using a local scale for suggesting global themes, conceptual views, and transdisciplinary circumstances. Focusing on key topics like the theatricality of water engineering, the understanding of water rhythm and the recovery of water memories, this paper encompasses the articles presented in this theme issue of SHIMA Journal, providing a geo-historical frame for the various interpretations of living, narrating and representing Venice and its Lagoon.
