On the occasion of the celebrations of 2018, the year of the centenary of the death of Arrigo Boito (1842-1918) and the one hundred and fiftieth anniversary of the opera Mefistofele (1868-2018), the Institute for Theater and Melodrama of the Giorgio Cini Foundation in Venice organized the international study conference «Here is the world»: Arrigo Boito, the future in the past and the past in the future, which took place from 13 to 15 November 2018, edited by Maria Ida Biggi, Emanuele d'Angelo and Michele Girardi. The appointment was made as part of the activities relating to the National Committee for Boitian celebrations, of which the Institute is the promoter together with the Municipality of Parma. The Institute has also collaborated with important Veronese associations (Verona Accademia for the Opera, Fondo Peter Maag, Gaspari Foundation) to celebrate the great artist together with his most faithful friend in a further international conference, Two Venetians in the world: Faccio Boito, a "Hamlet" more, edited by Michele Girardi and Mario Tedeschi Turco. This volume houses a targeted choice of the relationships given in the two events: it is therefore not a volume of acts, but is proposed as an updated and indispensable tool to mark the state of research and studies on the multifaceted work of Boito, artist and intellectual among the most influential of Italy at the turn of the two centuries. Specialists and scholars of the different artistic fields that have characterized the career of the famous intellectual, have re-read and re-analyzed the production of avant-garde composer, librettist and writer, the activity of theater and music critic and that of translator and theater director, returning on historical research paths and opening new ones. A particular study was also dedicated to the opera Mephistopheles, a milestone in the nineteenth-century Italian opera repertoire which, represented for the first time in 1868 at the Scala in Milan, where it fell into the roar of a memorable fiasco, it was revived in a revised version starting from the Bolognese recovery of 1875, entering in the world lyric repertoire.
