The core of the paper is a new edition of the two fragments from Epicurus' On gods and On holiness which are preserved in Philodemus' third book On gods (PHerc. 152/157). New readings and the discovery of a physical link between these fragments allow some insights into the content of Epicurus' theological works, Philodemus' philological working method and Cicero's familiarity with the details of Epicurean doctrine.

Abstract

The core of the paper is a new edition of the two fragments from Epicurus' On gods and On holiness which are preserved in Philodemus' third book On gods (PHerc. 152/157). New readings and the discovery of a physical link between these fragments allow some insights into the content of Epicurus' theological works, Philodemus' philological working method and Cicero's familiarity with the details of Epicurean doctrine.
