Abstract

In Thyestes, but not only in this tragedy, Seneca presents the passion in its extreme manifestation. But how can the passion with rationality conciliate? In the tradition of the Stoic school, but with a clear reference to Aristotle, Seneca finds an original way to overcome doctrinal monism in a dynamic perspective. Akrasia can only be found in a precise phase of the passionate motion: certainly not where awareness has not been reached or when voluntariness in making decisions has taken a definite direction. In this way, chapter 4 of the second book of De ira is to be reinterpreted.
