This essay investigates the uses of the place name Venetiae, which is attested by written sources since the early Roman imperial period. This toponym may refer to different territories, all located in north-eastern Italy and characterised by undefined and switching borders, as well as by the presence of both land and water. Such plurality of meanings still exists today, when multiple «Venices» overlap in the age of overtourism and virtual reality.
