Max Brod and Felix Weltsch, Kafka's closest friends, characterise their work as a kind of "monograph on blurred ideas". They show that the postulates of evidence and exact description established by Franz Brentano's and Husserl's philosophical phenomenology are only valid in the realm of science, but that otherwise our world of perception is determined by a multitude of vague, indeterminate, blurred sensory and memory impressions, which an empirically working psychology, just like philosophical epistemology, has to capture and explicate their functions. This writing is therefore an ideal starting point for drawing a more differentiated picture of the epistemic configuration of Prague modernism and, in principle, for sounding out the possibilities of a psychological aesthetics. However, the new edition of this writing also reopens a long-buried access to the literature of Prague modernism, especially for Kafka's narrative work. The edition of the long out-of-print work contains an introduction as well as selected literature on the reception of the work.
