Abstract

Durs Grünbein's poetological engagement with Descartes forms a complex of works in its own right, which has been studied very frequently by researchers. This article attempts to distinguish between different phases of Grünbein's reception of Descartes and to describe his handling of the source texts. Grünbein's Descartes texts prove to be inconsistent and many have partly contradictory tendencies. The research literature, meanwhile, largely refrains from engaging with Grünbein's sources, and instead makes use of largely outdated interpretive clichés.
