The so-called Mendolito di Adrano site, an anonymous native centre, flourished between the 9th - 8th and the 5th century BC and located in the Mount Etna region, overlooking the Simeto riverbed, has brought forth four inscriptions on different items in the Greek alphabet but in a non-Greek language, among which includes the only civic inscription in a non-Greek language from pre-Roman Sicily. Even if there exists a shared opinion among scholars on the interpretation of the documents, their historical context, including the cause, purpose and means of dissemination of the epigraphic practice remain obscure. A comprehensive analysis of this evidence within its well known archaeological context shows the need for re-analysis using a new theorical approach, which gives value to the peculiarity of the Mendolito site.
