The Museo Lapidario Maffeiano, the first epigraphic museum in the world, founded in Verona during the first half of the 18th century, serves as a case study to investigate how its non-local (i.e. non-Veronese) inscriptions were treated both by Scipione Maffei, the museum’s founder, and by later scholars. While in the CIL (Corpus inscriptionum Latinarum) Theodor Mommsen severely criticized Maffei for providing insufficient information on the geographic origin of inscriptions, a thorough examination of published and unpublished primary sources partially fills this gap. In particular, archival documents related to the role played by Venice as a marketplace for antiquities in the 18th century, combined with works from the history of classical scholarship, help us reconstruct the succession of “epigraphic situations” in which inscribed monuments were displayed across time. Only by tracing back the “life-cycle” of inscriptions, from their present location to the time and place in which they were originally produced, can their comprehensive value as historical sources fully be appraised.

Abstract

This article suggests a methodological approach to the study of ancient inscriptions, specifically those kept in locations different from their place of initial installation (the so-called alienae).
