In the Ancien Regime, war was the normal condition: it was the major industry for State and society, a society based on the profession of arms, honour and courage. The peace of Passarowitz holds an important position in European and Venetian history: it went beyond the solution of a peripheral conflict and created new problems to European culture and society. First of all, it erased one of the main excuses to start wars: religious differences or, better, the need to defend Christianity. Moreover, it seemingly removed another cause for right wars, i.e. the fear of the enemy, the threat of attacks. It therefore introduced a new kind of war, to be fought not through weapons but through commerces. It also introduced the need to define the concept of right war by analysing not its causes but its procedures and the ways of fighting it. The paper show how the outcome of the peace of Passarowitz shifted the attention on such themes, thus having the Venetian culture reflect on the concept of right war, mainly through the works Il dubbio chiarito intorno al dominio del mare Adriatico (1726) and Storia civile by Vettor Sandi (1755).
