Abstract

The foundation of Ca’ Foscari was not consequent to the unification of Venice with the Kingdom of Italy, but the result of a long reflection initiated after 1847 by Daniele Manin. The original objective was to make Venice part of an Austrian economic and educational system, which integrated Lombardy, Veneto and the Austrian Littoral through trade, railways and navigation. Perspectives changed only with the unification of Venice with the Kingdom of Italy, in 1866, when the function of the port and the School of Commerce were no longer conceived in synergy, but in competition with the other ports of the Adriatic Sea
