The MoSE construction process in the lagoon ofVcnice and the perception of risk The climate changes that have occurred since the advent of the age of the Anthropocene have been affecting the ecosystems of our entire planet, and the search for means aimed at mitigating the most negative effects has increased exponentially in the field of both natural sciences and social sciences. The visible effects in this particular new geological period in the Venice lagoon can be attributed to the increase in the phenomenon of high tides in town and the consequent search for solutions to protect Venice. After a long incubation, what was considered one of the most impressive and ambitious hydraulic engineering works came to light: The MoSE mobile flood barrier system, the acronym stands for Modulo Sperimentale Elettromeccanico - Experimental Electromechanical Module. The contract was awarded to Consorzio Venezia Nuova, the only concessionary operating on behalf of the Ministry of Infrastructures and Transport and the Venice Water Authority (now Interregional Public Works Provider for theTriveneto area) and covered the placement of mobile barriers at the inlets of the lagoon, which can be operated, as required, to isolate the lagoon from the sea. But what is the reaction of the inhabitants and fishermen to such a massive and invasive project? What are the effects on the delicate lagoon system? And what are the conflicts that such work has entailed? In our article, we will try to outline the perception of the people involved in these flood protection measures.

La costruzione del MoSE nella laguna di Venezia e la percezione del rischio I cambiamenti climatici conseguenti all’Antropocene stanno influenzando gli ecosistemi di tutto il pianeta e la ricerca di mezzi per mitigarne gli impatti più negativi si sta moltiplicando sia nell’ambito delle scienze naturali che delle scienze sociali. Gli effetti visibili di questo particolare nuovo periodo geologico nella laguna di Venezia sono riconducibili all’incremento del fenomeno delle alte maree cittadine e alla conseguente ricerca di soluzioni per la difesa della città. Dopo una lunga incubazione è così nata quella che viene considerata tra le più imponenti e ambiziose opere di ingegneria idraulica mai realizzate: il progetto comunemente denominato MoSE (Modulo Sperimentale Elettromeccanico). L’esecuzione dei lavori fu affidata al Consorzio Venezia Nuova, il concessionario unico che opera per conto del Ministero delle Infrastrutture e dei Trasporti e del Magistrato alle Acque di Venezia (oggi Provveditorato Interregionale per le Opere Pubbliche del Triveneto) e consistono nel posizionamento di dighe mobili nelle bocche di porto, le quali all’occorrenza permettono di isolare la laguna dal mare.
