Starting from 50 interviews with migrants of different origins conducted in Veneto and Emilia-Romagna, we show the different motivations migrants in Italy have for planning a migration to a third country. Such. motivations are both economic (unemployment linked to the economic crisis, social mobility, a stronger welfare) and non-economic (allowing a better education to the children, attempting to escape stigma, a research of a context with more co-ethnic or co-religionists). We link such plans to the role of naturalization, showing how the Italian citizenship is not only a way to secure one's permanence in Italy but also a way to be able to transfer to third countries.
