Venetian chronicle writing: from factual compilation to event telling

How did Venetian chroniclers process their information and what were their sources? How did they manage facts and create fact-aggregating techniques in order to tell the history of the city and the bravery of its ruling elite? The paper concentrates more on compiling and writing techniques and available sources that may have conditioned the chronicle structure than on contents or the problem of chronicle genealogy. It claims that the Venetian chronicle due to its structure, was subject to textual manipulation or reediting, a fact that contributed to its success and propagation. Yet, in the course of the fifteenth century, the overwhelming mass of information one had to process led to its incapability to fulfill the growing expectations of a new generation of readers influenced by the emerging renaissance culture and its insistence on historical analysis and event telling, rather than a factual compilation.
