In the first section of the paper, reference is made to the spoudogeloion (the mixture of seriousness and wit), a category peculiar to so-called Menippean Satire, a literary genre scholars have connected to Fulgentius' prologue. This category can be shown to appear in the text in different ways and special attention is focused on what might be called 'mythological hyperbole'. In the second section, Fulgentius' original reworking of mythological material is analyzed, focusing on the figure of Midas - who appears once in the prologue and twice among the fable - and comparing the Fulgentian version of this myth with 'traditional' sources such as Ovid and Hyginus.
