The short ethical treatise On virtue (De virtute or De virtutibus or De virtutibus et vitiis) attributed to Aristotle is normally regarded as spurious by scholars, and its origin and date are uncertain though it was probably compiled between the fourth and the third centuries B.C. or in the first century B.C. or A.D by a member of the peripatetic school or by an eclectic philosopher attempting to reconcile the doctrines of Plato and Aristotle. The work circulated indirectly as the second part of the De passionibus attributed to Andronicus of Rhodes and in Stobaeus’ Florilegium, and during the Middle Ages it was translated twice into Arabic and once into Armenian. The text is transmitted by 70 Greek manuscripts dating from thetenth to the eighteenth centuries, that are here summarily described.
