This paper examines four dining episodes, both public and private, occurred in Cisalpine Gaul between 50 and 43 B.C. It seems right to see a political value in all of them, thanks to textual and political elements. The analysis aims to: 1) relate such occasions to the evolution that epula and convivia went through in late Republican Rome; 2) outline Caesar’s strategies of political dining at Rome and in the provinces; 3) stress their usefulness as a means – and a place – for setting up political decisions outside the institutional domain.

Abstract
This paper examines four dining episodes, both public and private, occurred in Cisalpine Gaul between 50 and 43 B.C. It seems right to see a political value in all of them, thanks to textual and political elements. The analysis aims to: 1) relate such occasions to the evolution that epula and convivia went through in late Republican Rome; 2) outline Caesar’s strategies of political dining at Rome and in the provinces; 3) stress their usefulness as a means – and a place – for setting up political decisions outside the institutional domain.File in questo prodotto:
