‘Epigonoi’

The present paper deals with the third and last poem of the Theban epics, the Epigonoi: it deals with its authorship and with the plot, clarifies its close and multifarious connection with the preceding poem, the Thebais, and offers a detailed survey of the fragments and of the various mythological issues they raise. Furthermore, the key role played by this poem in connecting the Theban saga to the Trojan epics is vindicated, and the inconcinnities it brought about by the artificial grafting of one independt tradition onto another are also taken into account.
