Abstract

Cuneiform was used for about three millennia throughout the Near East. Subsequent adaptations and transformations allowed the use of cuneiform to write a full range of different languages, both Semitic and non-Semitic, and also enabled the birth of brand-new (alphabetic) writing systems. The contact between languages by means of cuneiform culminated in the first millennium BCE, when cuneiform was used to write Greek and Aramaic, and conversely with the adoption of the Greek alphabet to transliterate Babylonian texts.
