This essay explores the stylistic textures and content of a key song by Robert Burns and investigates the possible translation strategies to be used for this kind of text. The in-between nature of Burns's songs - half-way between proper poetic texts written for the page and songs to be sung - represent a real challenge for the translator in any language.
