Radar images acquired from 1991 to 1995 by the synthetic aperture radar (SAR) aboard the European Remote Sensing satellites ERS 1 and ERS 2 have been used to study the dynamics of internal solitary waves in the Strait of Messina. Roughness patterns of internal waves which are imaged by the SARs are compared with surface convergence patterns calculated by an one-dimensional, two-layer numerical model which describes the generation and propagation of internal waves in the Strait of Messina.

Abstract

Radar images acquired from 1991 to 1995 by the synthetic aperture radar (SAR) aboard the European Remote Sensing satellites ERS 1 and ERS 2 have been used to study the dynamics of internal solitary waves in the Strait of Messina. Roughness patterns of internal waves which are imaged by the SARs are compared with surface convergence patterns calculated by an one-dimensional, two-layer numerical model which describes the generation and propagation of internal waves in the Strait of Messina.
