cis-[PtCl2(PPh3)2]-SnCl2 (I) is a highly active catalytic system for the regioselective hydroformylation of CH2:CHCH2CO2Et under std. conditions. Ketones or arom. hydrocarbons are the best reaction media, however, EtOH strongly inhibits the catalytic activity. In this solvent the catalytic precursor was recovered as the acyl complex, trans- [PtCl(COCH2CH2CH2CO2Et)(PPh3)2], which is also catalytically active. Thus, CH2:CHCH2CO2Et was treated with CO and H2 at 5 MPa in MeCOEt in the presence of I to give 95.9% a mixt. of OHC(CH2)3CO2Et and OHCCHMeCH2CO2Et in the ratio of 3.93:1 resp.
