The study presents ca 150 unpublished sealings from the 3rd millennium BC urban centre of Tell Beydar in North-eastern Syria, which bear the impression of 51 different cylinder seals, part of which were previously unknown. It includes a complete catalogue of the evidence: complete or partially reconstructible fragments are presented first, arranged according to different iconographic themes, in each case followed by smaller fragments, which are listed according to excavation numbers. There follows what is the first comprehensive discussion of the seal iconography, style, function, and intra-site distribution and of sealing practices at Tell Beydar, which takes into account previously excavated but still unpublished material from this important site as well. The glyptic production of Tell Beydar is evaluated in the wider framework of the Early Dynastic glyptic of Mesopotamia and Siria, and local or regional styles are identified and described.
