This paper describes the distribution of the quantifier vs in Old Bulgarian, with particular reference to Codex Suprasliensis. It supports the hypothesis that quantity items in UG can have different syntactic status, such as being adjectives, nouns, or a dedicated category Q. At this stage Q in Old Bulgarian displays agreement with N parallel to adjectives. The status of vs shows a situation in flux between the two categorial distinctions, which are resolved in favor of Q in the modern language.

Abstract

This paper describes the distribution of the quantifier vs in Old Bulgarian, with particular reference to Codex Suprasliensis. It supports the hypothesis that quantity items in UG can have different syntactic status, such as being adjectives, nouns, or a dedicated category Q. At this stage Q in Old Bulgarian displays agreement with N parallel to adjectives. The status of vs shows a situation in flux between the two categorial distinctions, which are resolved in favor of Q in the modern language.
