The article explores the interrelations between text and what can be termed sub-text bringing into focus two interrelated aspects of referentiality: the relationship between the code of the real and the code of the fictional on the one hand, and the pact with the reader each text postulates or creates anew, on the other. This works aims at inaugurating an Austerian paratextual map of sorts.
