The book and the introduction deal with the story of a criminal trial and the life of Bernardo Marchesini a judge of the Lombardo-Veneto who was born in Ala di Trento in 1787 and died in Vicenza in 1862. Most of his judicial activity was carried out in the Vicenza court where he arrived in 1825. Marchesini was an intransigent judge who collided with political and judicial structures of his time, accused of corruption. In the years 1831-1833 he attended to the trial instructed for the murder of Giovanni Rama, a young countryman of Durlo, a mountain village of the Lessinia. The book deals with clues and evidences rose up during the trial formation, and particularly with the difficult individuation of the motive (movente) which originated the crime.
