We investigate whether low-rank coals can be seen as a polydisperse distribution of particles having an internal structure. More definitely, we have analyzed the case where particles are cubic stackings of paraellelepipedic lauers of uniform electronic density. Each layer is a 1. 50 Angstrom thick and the interlayer spacing is 3. 35 Angstrom. The particle distributions are determined by best-fitting the experimental intensities. One finds that the model reproduces the fractal behavior of the latter, provided the momentum transfer range is less than two decades wide.
